China’s Equilibrium Real Exchange Rate: A Counterfactual Analysis*
China’s maintenance of a de facto peg against the US dollar during the Asian crisis caused a realignment of exchange rates in the Asian region. This paper explores the “equilibrium” level of China’s real effective rate in the lead-up and during that crisis. A derivative of the Devarajan-Lewis-Robinson three-good general equilibrium model is employed to estimate time paths of the equilibrium rea...
متن کاملReal Effective Exchange Rate and Trade Performance in Iran
The Purpose of this paper is to investigate the long-run effect of real effective exchange rate on Iran non-oil trade balance. The methodology is based on ARDL procedure that can be applied irrespective of whether the regressors are I(0) or I(1). The results show the real depreciation has not a favorable long - run effect on the non-oil trade balance of Iran from 1979 to 2001.
متن کاملEstimating Exchange Rate Equations Using Estimated Expectations
This paper takes a somewhat different approach from the recent literature in estimating exchange rate equations. It assumes uncovered interest rate parity and models how expectations are formed. Agents are assumed to base their expectations of future interest rates and prices, which are needed in the determination of the exchange rate, on predictions from a ten equation VAR model. The overall m...
متن کاملEstimating long-run equilibrium real exchange rates: short-lived shocks with long-lived impacts on Pakistan
The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that affect real exchange rate volatility for Pakistan through the co-integration and error correction model over a 30-year time period, i.e. between 1980 and 2010. The study employed the autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH), generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) and Vector Error Correction model...
متن کاملTax Effects on the Real Exchange Rate
This study examines the effects of taxes on the real exchange rate through their marginal impacts on economic activity. We develop a model that shows that an increase in the capital interest tax rate leads to real domestic currency depreciation while an increase in wage or consumption tax rates lead to a real domestic currency appreciation. These theoretical findings are supported by an empiric...
